New Orleans pianist, organist and singer-songwriter John ‘Papa’ Gros brings the unmistakable spirit of the Crescent City to Toulouse Lautrec.
For more than 30 years, Gros has been both a keeper and an interpreter of New Orleans music, blending funk, soul, R&B, jazz, blues, rock and Americana into a sound that is deeply rooted in tradition yet unmistakably his own.
His latest project, Giants, pays a groove-driven tribute to the artists who shaped his musical identity, including Allen Toussaint, Dr John, The Meters, Levon Helm and Billy Preston. Drawing from this rich musical lineage alongside his extensive catalogue, Gros delivers a live show filled with infectious rhythms, exceptional musicianship and irresistible New Orleans energy.
Expect soulful vocals, fiery keyboard playing and relentless grooves from a consummate performer whose music captures the joy, character and creative spirit of his hometown.
About John ‘Papa’ Gros
Born and raised in New Orleans, John ‘Papa’ Gros began his career as a solo performer in the early 1990s. His talent soon attracted the attention of celebrated musicians George Porter Jr. and Snooks Eaglin, who invited him to perform as a supporting musician.
After releasing his solo debut, Day’s End, in 2004, Gros spent more than a decade leading Papa Grows Funk, recording six albums with the acclaimed band. He returned to solo work with River’s on Fire in 2016, followed by Central City in 2020, further establishing his place within the living tradition of New Orleans music.
Known for his dynamic and joyous performances, Gros has appeared at festivals and venues across the United States and Europe, sharing the distinctive musical magic of New Orleans with audiences around the world.
